Tips on housebreaking a puppy?
?Joshua’s~?~Girl? asked:
We got a daschund puppy about a month ago and we’re having serious problems trying to housebreak him. We can take him outside and keep him out for up to 15 minutes at a time, yet he’ll come in the house and do his thing on the carpet almost immediately after. It’s getting to be a real pain cleaning the carpet every time we turn around! Any tips that might make housebreaking the little guy a little speedier process and a bit more effective perhaps?

Do NOT use *** pads. This teaches your dog that it is ok to go in the house and confuses him.
Always keep him in the same room as you so you can keep an eye on him. If he wanders too much get a leash and tie him near you so you can watch. As soon as he starts to go tell him no no no no and run him outside. When he goes outside praise him. As he becomes more trustable you can let him have 2 rooms at a time and eventually you won’t need to watch him at all.
If you can’t watch him or are gone put him in a crate. Make sure the crate is only bid enough for him to lie down, turn around and stand up in. Also don’t put any blankets or stuff like that in there until he learns. Otherwise the *** gets soaks up and he doesn’t care that he messed his crate. Most dogs will not go where they sleep. This will also set your dog up for success. Since he can’t go in the house because he is in a crate or being watched and corrected then he won’t have a chance to get away with and think, well, if mommy’s not home I can *** on the carpet! and it will take much longer to re-train the more often he goes.
Do not leave his water or food out. After he eats or drinks find out how long it will take for him to have to go. Then get him outside when he’ll need to go and reward him for going potty outside.
Take him out before bed and before going in his crate, and don’t give him food or water 2 hours before bed or being in a crate for a few hours.
Good luck!

Small dogs are really hard to break. I have an 11 months old min pin, and we are still working with him. He is about 85% potty trained. We found that neutering him made it SO much easier. We also have a crate we keep in him. We would put him there with some toys,. then take him out about every two hours. Most dogs won’t soil the place they sleep in. We did what is called imbilecal cord training. Get a long leash and keep it strapped to you, with your dog. That way you can always see what he is doing. Make sure to wash the smell out of the carpet. Petsmart also sells some different sprays that will repell him from going to the bathroom in certain spots. Try to be patient, teaching small dogs is tough.

it is important that you stay outside with the puppy because he will want to come right back in and be with you. If you come back in and he starts to *** or poop, snatch him up in mid *** and take him outside. Also if you get on a schedule take him out immediately when he wakes up and about 15 minutes after he eats. Also always remember to praise and treat them everytime they *** and poop, just make a big deal out of it. Possitive reinforcement is key, just stay consistant.
