Do you have any tips for removing cat odor?

Haylebird asked:

My husband walked into our bedroom and accidentally frightened our cat, who was intently watching a bird outside. The cat sprayed—urine or something. I’ve washed the bedding, cleaned the carpet, we actually threw out the dresser that was involved…this was months ago and the odor is still horrendous!
Yes, the cat is neutered.

  1. Exquisite Rugs

Try coating everything with lysol, and open a window to let it air out. After about 30 mins. , then spray everything with febreeze. If the smell still persists, then the probably is the odor is down in your carpet padding. YOu will need to get a carpet cleaner, clean the carpeting, then put in liquid fabric softener into clean hot water and go over the floors with that as well. That should do it. GL, hope this helps!

Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot you can do for cat urine. It has that horrible ammonia smell & lasts forever. I would throw everything out & start over. If it’s on the carpet, the carpets will have to be changed & the floor underneath treated for odor. Washing the items & cleaning the carpet will not work. I had a friend who left thier car window open, cat got in & sprayed/peed all over the uplopstry….long story short, had to get RID of the car. There was nothing they could do to treat it. Using anything else like sprays, etc. Will only “mask” the odor for a short time. It will eventually come back. I have used a product called Nature’s Miracle for dog urine. It worked OK, but definately not a miracle. Good luck!
